Foil invitations are a favorite among brides and party throwers alike — and for good reason. They’re gorgeous! Adding foil to an invitation creates a “wow” factor and sense of luxury like no other.

From process to pricing, foil is different from other printing styles. I get a lot of questions about foil, so I thought I’d answer the most commonly asked ones here. My hope is that this will help you make educated choices, so your final product will be exactly what you want!

Here we go…

1. “Why Are Some Foil Invitations So Much More Expensive Than Others?”

I’ve been asked this many times. Depending on where you look, you’ll see a broad price range for what is advertised as “foil stamping”.

But why?

Many things can affect price. But more often than not, products on the cheaper end of the spectrum don’t actually contain foil STAMPING. Usually, these products use foil SLEEKING.

2. “What’s the Difference Between Foil Stamping and Foil Sleeking?”

With Foil Stamping, a copper die (aka “stamp”) of the artwork needs to be made. This is the case whether you are printing 1 or 1,000. Creation of the die is one of the reasons for the higher cost. After the die is created, Foil Stamping is done using a press. It’s truly an art just as much as it is a print process, and it requires a considerable amount of set up.

Many of the online foil invitations you see are usually Foil Sleeking. With Sleeking, foil lies flat on top of dry, digitally printed toner. The foil then fuses to the toner, rather than being stamped INTO the paper, as is done with Foil Stamping.

3. “Why Should I Pay for Foil Stamping When I Can Get Foil Sleeking for Less?”

You can see the difference in quality immediately. Foil Stamping provides a much higher quality look and feel. It really just depends on your expectation. If you’re looking for a low-cost foil “look” for a dozen birthday party invitations, Foil Sleeking would be much more cost effective. However, if you have your heart set on foil wedding invitations, paying for high quality may be more important to you.

**NOTE: While Foil Sleeking can be a cheaper-yet-still-nice alternative to Foil Stamping, check the quality. While Stamping presses foil into the page to leave what is considered to be a “permanent mark”, foil lies on top of paper with Sleeking. This can make Foil Sleeking more susceptible to wearing off, especially if it’s not done well. If you’re thinking of choosing Foil Sleeking, I recommend you ask for samples to check the quality before placing an order.**

Another thing to consider when deciding between Stamping and Sleeking is order quantity. Due to the print process (cutting the copper die), minimum quantities for Foil Stamping are usually higher (not always though, so ask!) than those for Foil Sleeking.

4. “Which Do You Offer?”

Due to the higher quality, I offer Foil Stamping.

5. “What Color Foils Do You Offer?”

Here’s a list of the colors I offer for Foil Stamping:

6. “Can I Incorporate a Metallic Look Into My Invitations Without Foil?”

Absolutely! Instead of using foil, you can print using a Metallic Ink. I offer Metallic Inks in gold and silver. They are not shiny like foil, but they still have a shimmery, metallic look. Think of the way gold ink may look on a hand calligraphed envelope. Gorgeous, right?! Printing Metallic Inks on a shimmery paper provides an even fancier look.

Layering invitations on top of mirror or glitter paper provides a shiny pop of color around the edge. Mirror and glitter paper are also great for belly bands.
